Biography

Thomas George born 1918

American painter of semi-abstract imagery inspired by impressions of nature. Born in New York. BA, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, 1940. Served in the US Navy 1942-6. Studied at the Art Students League in New York, then lived from 1949-53 in Europe, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris, and the State Institute of Arts, Florence. First one-man exhibition at the Ferargil Gallery, New York, 1951. Became interested in nature as a subject while living in Italy. Lived in Japan 1956-7 and was influenced by Japanese art. Made some works in the mid 1960s with hard-edge shapes. Has made a number of visits to northern Norway since the mid 1960s, and made drawings of the landscape there; also visited China in 1974. Lives in Princeton, New Jersey.
