Sunday Social Sargent’s Madame X and the Art of Taking Risks

Join us at Tate Britain for a day of activites exploring the art of taking risks

Celebrating the closing of Sargent and Fashion, this free programme takes inspiration from Sargent’s sensational portrait, Madame X, to explore how taking risks through art can push boundaries and champion for inclusivity.

Taking place throughout Tate Britain, the day will offer free and drop in talks, workshops, performances, and tours.

This event is part of the Terra Foundation for American Art Series: New Perspectives and has been provided by Tate Gallery on behalf of Tate Enterprises Ltd.

All events are free.

11.00 - 13.00 Film screening of Beyond the Brushstroke: Shaqúelle Whyte

Watch Beyond the Brushstroke, a filmed studio visit with artist Shaqúelle Whyte and art historian Alayo Akinkugbe (A Black History of Art)

The film will play regularly from 11.00 – 13.00. Duration: 10 min 13 sec.

11.00-17.30 Explore the Fashion & Race Database

Discover The Fashion and Race Database, an online platform filled with tools that expand the narrative of fashion history and challenge misrepresentation within the fashion system. 

Drop-in, Taylor Digital Studio 

11.00-17.00 Studio Portraiture with Shannon Bono*

Join visual artist Shannon Bono in this portrait painting workshop. Guided by Bono and taking inspiration from the Sargent and Fashion exhibition, you will work with the artist and a life model to create a unique portrait.

Suitable for all abilities. Materials will be provided.

Join thematic tours of the collection led by our staff and volunteers. The tours will be running throughout the day, beginning at 12.00, 13.00, 14.00 and 15.00.

Each tour will meet at the entrance to the Duveens, at the main floor of the gallery.

14.00 - Performance: Sadie Sinner feat. Duane Nasis*

Multi-media cabaret performance led by Sadie Sinner, inspired by Sargent’s portraits.

Booking required, Clore Auditorium

*This event is free but ticketed. Tickets will be available to collect in the Manton Foyer an hour before the event starts, on a first come first served basis.*

Shannon Bono

Shannon Bono (b.1995, London) is a painter embodying an afrofemcentrist consciousness, sharing muted narratives and projecting the black women’s lived experience through her own lens. She is invested in producing layered, figurative, compositions embedded with symbolism that centralise black womanhood as a source of knowledge and understanding. Enamoured by African spiritually, Christian iconography and renaissance art she employs its purpose of cultural impact for an improved society within her works.

Fashion and Race Database

The Fashion and Race Database is the first and most trusted education platform that provides dedicated research and programming, guided by subject matter experts, to advocate diversity and explore the longstanding impact of race and misrepresentation in fashion.

Michaela Stark

Michaela Stark, an Australian artist and couturier based in London, specializes in crafting unique lingerie pieces that sculpt and transform the body. Known for her avant-garde approach, she pushes boundaries through artistic performances, such as her recent showcase at Fondazione Sozzani Milan. Her work has garnered acclaim in fashion and culture media, including features in New York Times, Vogue US, Showstudio, and Dazed. Collaborating with artists like Nick Knight and Charlotte Rutherford, she's designed for Beyoncé, Tove Lo, and Sam Smith, and showcased her creations at New York Fashion week through her collaboration with Victoria’s Secret in 2023.

Sadie Sinner

Sadie Sinner (she/they) is a creative force! Founder and curator of The Cocoa Butter Club, Sadie performs a seamless repertoire bursting with the RnB, Blues, Jazz, Motown, Funk and Neo-soul that raised her. Sadie brings entire rooms to their feet - her vocals and vibe, compelling them to dance the night away!

Duane Nasis

Duane Nasis (he/they) is a queer Filipino-British multidisciplinary movement artist based in London. With a movement background rooted in London’s thriving ballroom/voguing culture, Duane has explored a diverse range of practices from physical theatre, clowning and cabaret, to contemporary dance, gymnastics, and even lucha libre wrestling; developing a unique physical vocabulary that has seen them work for a range of clients such as Sadlers Wells, Rina Sawayama, and Marvel Studios. Most recently, Duane has collaborated on two short film works with Turner Prize-nominated British artist Anthea Hamilton - both projects exploring themes of queerness & masculinity.

Tate Britain's step-free entrance is on Atterbury Street. It has automatic sliding doors and there is a ramp down to the entrance with central handrails.

The Exhibition is on the Lower floor of the gallery.

  • Accessible, standard and Changing Places toilets are located on the Lower floor.
  • Ear defenders can be borrowed from the ticket desk on the Lower floor.
